Founded in 1973, the journal is currently published monthly by the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics (ASPET) from offices in Bethesda, USA.[1][2] The journal publishes articles on in vitro and in vivo studies of the metabolism, transport, and disposition of drugs and environmental chemicals, including the expression of drug-metabolizing enzymes and its regulation.[1] As of 2010[update], the editor in chief is Eric F. Johnson.[3]

The journal was published on behalf of the society by Williams & Wilkins from offices in Baltimore, USA until the end of 1996.[4]
